Grok vs ChatGPT- which is better?
let's go head to head
Hey guys, it's Steve from @Spags.online on Instagram. This is my second newsletter. I'll be sharing Ai tools and other cool tech I'm playing each week. The Ai chatbot world is evolving - fast.
Grok 2 released a boat load of impressive features like image generation, image analysis, and post analysis, and it's also free to use. But is Grok actually better than ChatGPT? Or is it fluff and Elon Musk hype? That is the question.
In this newsletter, I'm going to do head to head comparison between the two tools and show which Ai chatbot reigns supreme.
Criteria
To decide which is better, let's compare Grok and ChatGPT on the following criteria:
Knowledge (teach me a concept)
Creativity
Coding
Image generation
Image analysis
Real-time data
Pricing
Prompt Comparison
The most common use case for Ai chatbots is to provide us with knowledge. Instead of searching on Google, Ai chatbots synthesize the data available and provide us with a coherent, digestible response to our query. Let's see if Grok or ChatGPT is better at this.
Knowledge
Explain the concept of quantum entanglement in simple terms.

Both responses are super interesting. At first, I thought Grok provided a better answer. It was structured and academic with a break down of terms. But when I read through it, it's still a little over my head. Whereas ChatGPT took a completely different approach. ChatGPT came across as more "human". It explained the concept to me like it was sitting across from me at a coffee shop and assumed I had zero prior physics knowledge. And this was very helpful in learning.
Although ChatGPT chose to withhold extra information, I feel like I understand the concept of quantum entanglement through it's glove box analogy. This human touch is pretty remarkable. I don't know how they engineered that into the Ai, but it's a big reason why ChatGPT is an awesome tool for content creation, writing, and marketing.
ChatGPT wins Knowledge ✅.
Creativity
Let’s see how Grok and ChatGPT both fair in writing a short story about a time-traveling chef.

^ Both responses go much longer, but let’s just compare the first few paragraphs. Grok’s short story is good, but comes across a bit straight forward. Maybe something a smart high schooler would write. I give it a B.
ChatGPT on the other hand…is next level. It could’ve been written by a NY Times best-selling author for all I know. The way it paints a picture Marco Valenti’s world and uniquely provides vivid imagery like the Roman marketplace and its “scent of spices and roasting meats. I give it an A+.
ChatGPT wins Creativity ✅.
Coding
Let's do a coding comparison ask Grok and ChatGPT to write a Python function that checks if a number is prime.

Now I'm not coding person, so someone out there can correct me on this. But as an outsider looking in, here's my perspective. Both responses come out correct and virtually the same. The main difference is that ChatGPT natively opens a new interface: a coding editor with notes on the side.
This UI is likely more comfortable for coders because you can keep your code on the screen within the editor, while prompting ChatGPT with more questions on the side. I also know people have built very successful with ChatGPT and are continuing to do so.
ChatGPT wins Coding ✅.
Image Generation
Let's do an image generation comparison. Grok's images are powered by Flux and ChatGPT's images are powered by DALL-E, so this is really a comparison of those 2 systems.

The main difference off the bat is ChatGPT's (OpenAi) lame copyright and content policies. It initially told me it could not generate an image of Super Mario because it is a copyright violation. And it would not generate an image of Tom Cruise shooting a flamethrower because "it doesn't comply with the content policy".
This is a big difference people talk about between ChatGPT vs Grok. ChatGPT tends to be more politically correct and safe, whereas Grok is more willing to tackle controversial topics. It also doesn't seem to care about copyright which is great for us.
Now although Grok's images are not as high resolution as ChatGPT's, I'm going to give this category to Grok. It is more flexible and has far less limits on images it will generate. The ideal use case is for memes or YouTube thumbnails, which I have used Grok for myself!
Grok wins Image Generation ✅.
Image Analysis
Let's compare image analysis capabilities by uploading an x-ray of a fractured ankle, and see how each Ai interprets it.

Wow. Here is a stark difference. I honestly thought Grok would be better an image analysis, but I was wrong! ChatGPT was able to correctly identify the x-ray as a significant ankle fracture, whereas Grok said there is no fracture at all. I tested this with a few more images and ChatGPT came out correct while Grok kept getting it wrong.
ChatGPT wins Image Analysis ✅.
Real-time data
When it comes to understanding breaking news, market trends, and stories unfolding in real-time, which Ai is more useful?
Grok.
Because Grok is plugged into X (formerly Twitter), it has a significant advantage over ChatGPT - receiving data from X posts AND the web.
Whereas ChatGPT can only crawl the web. It can only speak on a story after its published as an article to the web, which takes significantly longer and only comes from media outlets/bloggers. X receives data from millions of people posting on the platform.
Grok wins Real-time data ✅.
Pricing
ChatGPT has several paid tiers:
Free: limited features, speed, and data
Plus ($20/month): fast, more data and features (this is what I use)
Enterprise (Custom pricing): API access and enterprise features for businesses
Grok is free.
Grok wins Pricing ✅.
The Verdict
Overall, this is how the head to head comparison shook out:
Knowledge - ChatGPT 👑
Creativity - ChatGPT 👑
Coding - ChatGPT 👑
Image generation - Grok ✖️
Image analysis - ChatGPT 👑
Real-time data - Grok ✖️
Pricing - Grok ✖️
Without "weighing" each category, ChatGPT is still the superior platform. But more importantly, it depends on how you plan to use Ai. For example, here's the better Ai based on Use Cases:
Better with ChatGPT
General content creation (scripting a video/marketing copy)
Creativity (storytelling)
Coding assistance
Image analysis
Multilingual communication
Better with Grok
Current events / Market trends (real-time data)
Image generation
Leisurely want to play around with Ai (free to use)
For being a free tool, I still think Grok is fantastic. It's convenient if you're already on X and want to get a quick snapshot of the news or generate memes. Plus you get B+ level responses on most queries.
But, that's not why most people use Ai. If your goal is to be productive and use Ai to aid in your work, ChatGPT produces A+ level responses in most use cases. It is incredibly helpful and even structured this entire newsletter for me 😎.
More on YouTube
I’ll be dropping my first Youtube video this week. Big step forward. I’m new to YT content but it’s 2025 so time to try something new. I’ll be doing more Ai tool deep dives, tutorials, and more. Head over, subscribe, and come along for the ride!
